THE KEY POINT
A few checks before entering can help you avoid misunderstandings and make any later prize claim or support enquiry easier.
Start with the rules
The full terms and conditions are the best place to understand a promotion. Find the organiser’s name and contact details, then check age and residency requirements, exclusions, entry limits and the opening and closing times. Check the time zone too, especially if you live in a different state.
Check whether the promotion offers instant-win results, a regular draw at a later date, or both. For a regular draw, note the entry cut-off, draw date and time zone, and how winners will be notified. These are different steps and may happen on different days.
If entry involves a purchase, confirm which products, retailers and transactions qualify. Look for whether an entry limit applies per person, household or purchase. Two promotions from the same brand can have different rules.
If a requirement is unclear, ask the organiser before buying something to enter. Promoters who make these details easy to find help people make an informed choice and give their support team a clear reference when questions arise.
Read the whole prize description
Check what is included, what is excluded and whether you would need to cover any costs. For a travel or experience prize, look for booking restrictions, expiry dates and conditions affecting who can use it.
Find out how winners will be contacted, what evidence a claim needs and when the response is due. Keep a receipt or other qualifying evidence if the terms require it.
A chance to win is different from a promised prize. The ACCC explains that businesses must not describe a purchase as winning a prize when it only provides a chance. Consider whether the purchase itself is worthwhile to you.
Understand the use of your details
Read the privacy information beside the form and the linked policy. Look for who collects your details, why they are needed, who may receive them and how to make a privacy enquiry.
Check any marketing choices before submitting. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, or OAIC, explains what a privacy policy should cover and recommends asking the organisation if its explanation is unclear.
Leave yourself a useful record
Double-check your contact details, then save the terms, relevant receipt, confirmation and entry reference. A dedicated email folder is a simple way to keep them together.
If a claim deadline applies, put it in your calendar. Keep your own copy of key information so you can find it even if a social media post or promotional page later changes.
